Haruno Japanese Academy is a private, online academy founded in Tokyo in 2023. No cohorts and no syllabus you did not choose: one instructor, your hour, and the Japanese you actually want to speak, with a monthly culture lesson that carries the thinking behind the words.
Apps teach vocabulary. Group classes split one teacher across a dozen people. Here every minute belongs to one person: you speak for most of the 45 minutes, your instructor holds back so you reach for the sentence yourself, and you leave each lesson able to use one new thing.

All Haruno instructors don't just meet the same high standard in personality and character. Every one of them clears the same demanding bar in two other areas: the language ability to explain Japanese in plain, accessible English, and real classroom teaching experience. All nine instructors on our team have completed the Haruno Method training.

As a small-group school, every one of our teachers knows each student personally. To maintain a safe and supportive learning environment for all students, we may decline an application for enrollment, or ask a student to withdraw after enrolling.
You choose 4, 8, or 12 lessons per month and book them whenever suits you through our system. Every plan includes one culture lesson and 24/7 LINE support, and you can switch or cancel anytime.
Our instructors are based in Japan and abroad, giving us coverage across multiple time zones. We offer morning, afternoon, and evening slots that work well for both U.S. and European learners.
Yes. Many students start without knowing kana. Because lessons are always private, we start exactly where you are, and you are never held back by a group, or holding one back.
Absolutely. Most of our students learn Japanese simply because they love Japan: its culture, its people, its way of seeing the world. You don't need a test score or a deadline to start. Curiosity is more than enough.
Within a few months, many students can hold simple conversations, read basic signs and menus, and connect with Japanese people in a way that transforms their experience of Japan. Yes. A large portion of our students are in their 40s to 60s, and many return to Japanese after years or even decades away from studying. Our program is designed specifically for adult learners who want meaningful progress without stress.
Not at all. Some of our most enthusiastic students started in their 60s, 70s, and even 80s. We design every lesson around your pace: there is no pressure, no comparison, and no rush.
Each lesson follows a consistent flow: warm up conversation, personalized content, and a short recap. What changes is the topic and material, always built around what matters to you.
After each lesson, we upload a personalized summary to your Google Drive lesson folder. All lessons are also recorded, so you can review them anytime. Homework is submitted through the same shared folder.
Yes. You can reschedule or change your lessons anytime directly through our booking system, and credits stay valid for two months.
Twenty five minutes of real lesson, not a sales call. We assess your level, talk about what you want Japanese for, and map out what your first three months would look like.
Your instructor blocks out real time for you, so we hold a card as a deposit to confirm the booking. The lesson is free: nothing is charged when you attend, and the hold is released in full afterwards. Only a no show without notice is charged.
Raised by a mother who taught Japanese, Haruno grew up close to the craft of teaching a language. She began teaching herself in May 2023, and by that November had opened Haruno Online Japanese School TOKYO.
As of 2026 she leads a team of nine instructors under the name Haruno Japanese Academy, carrying language, culture, and the Japanese spirit to students around the world.
